Were Barbara's Most Fascinating People Actually Fascinating?
Barbara Walters Barbara's picked her fair share of questionable folks (Kate Gosselin, Monica Lewinsky, Geri Halliwell?!), but when the list was announced for this year's 10 Most Fascinating People, we wondered if Walters, at the ripe old age of 82, had officially jumped the shark. We decided to give Babs the benefit of the doubt and tuned in to see if the annual special proved that Pippa Middleton and The Kardashians (among others) were 10 Most Fascinating People-worthy. Our findings: Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler FergusonFun Fact: As a child, Stonestreet grew up on a farm, played football, and loved performing as a clown named 'Fizbo.'Memorable Quote: "Even just recently, [my father] asked me if I had a girlfriend and I had to say 'Dad, no, I don't.'" - Jesse Tyler Ferguson (who is openly gay)Fascinating Factor (on a scale of 1 - 10, 10 being most fascinating): 6. Their adorably close relationship outside of the show, and unlikely roads to stardom, were unexpected. Simon CowellFun Fact: Simon dropped out of high school and started his own music label by 20. His first big hit? "Ruff Mix," which featured dogs barking to dance music. Memorable Quote: (On Paula Abdul) "We didn't like each other in the beginning. I think it was sexual tension. On her part. I considered it...but then I thought, 'I don't think the after would be as good as the before.'"Fascinating Factor: 7. He's so quirky it's borderline OCD. His interview left me wanting to know more. The KardashiansFun Fact: The sisters identified Kourtney as the most book-smart, Khloe the most street-smart, and Kim the most conceited.Memorable Quote: "None of us think we have talents." -Khloe KardashianFascinating Factor: 4. No new discoveries here since privacy is not a part of this family's philosophy. Herman CainFun Fact: If he had his choice of any cabinet position, Cain would choose the Department of Defense, because he wants to influence the rebuilding of the country's military.Memorable Quote: "I happen to believe that the Democrats did not want an accomplished, articulate, optimistic black man to face President Obama. I can't prove that, Barbara. But I do believe that."Fascinating Factor: 2. Snoozefest. I think I fell asleep through the overwhelming majority of this conversation. Katy PerryFun Fact: The daughter of strict evangelical pastors, Perry wasn't allowed to celebrate Halloween, listen to music other than Gospel, or read books other than the Bible.Memorable Quote: "I did this Jesus tattoo when I was 18 years old. Legally. I did it because no matter how much I do change, I always want to know where my roots began."Fascinating Factor: 3. The chick that's famous for breaking out with "I Kissed a Girl (And I Liked It)" was raised in a strict household... and we've been reading about that ever since she released "I Kissed a Girl." Derek JeterFun Fact: He was drafted by the Yankees right out of high school, but Jeter ended up being stuck in the minor leagues for four years.Memorable Quote: "In my mind, if you don't win, it's a failure."Fascinating Factor: 4. Had he actually opened up about his love life, he probably would have been more fascinating, or at least interesting. Donald TrumpFun Fact: He let Barbara touch (and tug at) his hair. And it's definitely not a hairpiece.Memorable Quote: "We're $15 trillion in debt. We borrow from the Chinese. We're not a great country anymore. But there are millions of people that want my opinion. And I think that's fine."Fascinating Factor: 5. Trump is so overexposed, there weren't any surprises. Would have been interesting to hear more about his upbringing. Amanda Knox*Pippa Middleton* Steve Jobs (The Most Fascinating Person of 2011)Fun Fact: Rules indicate that the most fascinating person of the year must still be living, but it was decided that Steve Jobs was so deserving of the title, they gave it to him anyway. Memorable Quote: "He wanted things that were insanely great and would take, or accept, nothing less than that." --Disney CEO Bob IgerFascinating Factor: 10. The entire 90-minutes could have easily been dedicated to Jobs. Everything about the legendary Apple co-founder resonates with the word "fascinating." *There were no interviews done here, so they can't really be judged fairly. What did you think of the list?

Poor spend more on entertainment
No wonder Hollywood is hurting. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), spending on entertainment has declined 7% since 2009.The poorest Americans are doing more than their fair share to stem this decline by spending a larger percentage of their income on entertainment than the rest of society.Per BLS, the average U.S. household (or "consumer unit" in BLS speak) spent $2,504 on entertainment in 2010. That represents about 4% of the typical household's pre-tax income. As one might expect, the dollar amount expended on entertainment generally rises with income. Households earning $70,000 or more spent $4,438 on movies, music and other diversions last year, 3.7 times the average expenditure of those in the $15,000-$19,999 income slot. Yet, the latter group spent 6.8% of their total income on entertainment. The $70,000-plus households spent only 3.4%.Total U.S. household spending fell 2% from the previous year. That followed a 2.8% decline from 2008 to 2009. Entertainment spending was the hardest hit of all major categories, falling 7% in the 2010 survey. The previous year saw a 5% drop in the category. In the latest survey, health care (+1%) and transportation (+2%) were the only major components of spending to increase. Ed Helms, Rainn Wilson, John Krasinski Fans of The Office know that Dunder Mifflin throws one heck of a Christmas party. But can the annual holiday shindig cure a broken heart? After his split from Mrs. California last week, Robert California (James Spader) stops by the festivities in desperate need of cheering up (and possibly more). "Kevin, I actually appreciate the human intimacy. I feel like a kitten being cradled by a gorilla," he says as Kevin hugs him. "It's been 10 days since I had sexual intercourse." Dunder Mifflin products coming to a store near you Watch the exclusive clip below to see how Robert's doing. Applebaum & Nemec : Friendship leads to big-budget 'Mission'
Josh Applebaum & Andrew NemecIn the initial stages of "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol," screenwriters Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec huddled with star Tom Cruise, director Brad Bird and producer J.J. Abrams hashing over the broad story points."It was a communal process," says Appelbaum. "But when it gets down to me and Andre ""We spend a lot of time in room alone, laying it all out, beat for beat," continues Nemec."Because if we don't have that really detailed roadmap before starting the script, it can be mayhem," adds Appelbaum. It's not surprising to hear Appelbaum and Nemec complete each other's sentences. They're not just longtime professional partners -- they've been friends since they were third-graders at Riverdale Country School, a K-12 preparatory academy in NY .The duo went their separate ways for college, with Appelbaum attending NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, while Nemec went to USC. Reconvening in Los Angeles after graduation, they wrote a TV pilot they were certain would put them on the show business map. Nemec, who had guested on several series, would star; Appelbaum would direct."We had huge and ridiculous aspirations for it," Appelbaum says. But the script got them an agent they began working soon after that as staff writers on the first-run syndicated series "Fame L.A." (1997).Over the next several years, they bounced to the staff of a new show each season -- "Early Edition," "Martial Law," "Profiler," "Going to California," "She Spies" and "Fastlane" -- before landing on the Abrams-produced spy show "Alias" for three seasons. Finally, in 2007, they got their own show, "October Road," which lasted two seasons, and they went on to create the U.S. version of "Life on Mars" (2008-09) and "Happy Town" (2010).Since completing the latest "Mission: Impossible," the duo has been tapped to rewrite "Now You See Me" for Summit, script a reboot of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" for Paramount and producer Michael Bay, and a pen an untitled NY City-set disaster film for producer Mark Gordon."After that, our dance card is a little open," Nemec says."But we're definitely talking to J.J. about doing something in the near future," Appelbaum adds.TEN SCREENWRITERS TO WATCH 2011:Josh Applebaum & Andrew Nemec | Jay Baruchel & Jesse Chabot | Justin Britt-Gibson | Neil Cross | Andrew Haigh | Kurt Johnstad | Lauryn Kahn | Paula Pell | Jon Spaihts | Brian Yorkey Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

The Greening of Whitney Brown
An Arc Entertainment relieve a perfect Weekend production. Produced by Justin Moore-Lewy, Charlie Mason. Executive producers, Erection dysfunction Fitts, Sue Rathbone. Co-producer, Rachel Harrell. Directed by Peter Odiorne. Script, Gail Gilchriest. With: Sammi Hanratty, Aidan Quinn, Brooke Shields, Kris Kristofferson, Anna Colwell, Charlotte now now K. Matthews, Keith David, Slade Pearce, Natalia D. Dyer, India Scandrick, Odd Job Bob.The cost-effective recession proves a blessing in disguise for just about any spoiled urban tween in"The Greening of Whitney Brown," the storyplot from the girl as well as the equine that loved her. When Whitney's father handles to get rid of his high-needing to pay job inside the city, your family relocates to have an abandoned farm within the u . s . states. Put together by Gail Gilchriest, who modified "My Dog Skip" for the screen, and directed by newcomer Peter Odiorne, this simplistic story of bucolic redemption has handful of pretensions to depth, ambiguity or realism, based on its title cast, sprightly lead together with a helluva equine to draw family auds on its November. 11 bow. Whitney (Sammi Hanratty) reigns within an exclusive Philadelphia school, as evidenced by her landslide election as class leader and her snagging the dreamy new kid around (Slade Pearce) as her promenade date. Her sudden go to the boondocks with no cell-phone reception cuts her taken off her adoring public, except through sporadic pay-phone calls with a double-dealing Closest friend (Charlotte now now K. Matthews). Just like numerous Hollywood kidpics, the city girl finds new meaning having a equine, though here no racing glory is involved, since the equine in mind, Bob, can be a black-and-white-colored Gypsy Vanner and for that reason small, adorable plus much more attuned to humans than Lassie. Bob is certainly up for rural transportation, assorted techniques, approving nudges, disapproving snorts and dramatic, revenge-dealing examines formal occasions. With no pals her own age, Whitney costs nothing to bond more carefully with Mother (Brooke Shields), who calculates being eminently appropriate for the homesteader lifestyle, breathing deeply in the outdoors, happily perambulating inside the attractive fields and whipping up batches of rim preserve to promote with the kerbside to earn money. Father (Aidan Quinn), dealing with childhood demons, proves more recalcitrant: Not until Whitney helps him reconcile along with his crusty estranged father (Kris Kristofferson) can he finally reunite along with his inner-farmboy. Thesping is predictably professional, Kristofferson obtaining a rangy authenticity for the proceedings, his taciturn self-reliance contrasting with Quinn's introverted vulnerability. Hanratty's unquenchable perkiness, though well-built-into her can-do persona, evolves wearisome sometimes. Helmer Odiorne creates a fantastically groomed pastoral setting for Gilchriest's non-stop upbeat script, but does absolutely nothing to advise a context larger than Whitney's limited p.o.v.Camera (color), James L. Carter editor, Martin Hunter music, Randy Edelman music supervisor, Michael Lloyd production designer, Caroline Hanania art director, Christopher Tandon appear (Dolby Digital), Jim Emswiller supervisory appear editor, Kelly Cabral equine trainer/stunt coordinator, Tommie Turvey casting, Kerry Barden, Paul Schnee. Oscar Show Producer Replacements: If Not Brian Grazer, Then Who?
Michael Loccisano/Getty Images The Academy has never missed the late, great Oscar show producer Gil Cates more than it does today, as it seeks a replacement for Brett Ratner, who had been expected to serve in that capacity for February's 84th Academy Awards. Ratner submitted his resignation yesterday after making a series of comments that offended many in the industry, and Eddie Murphy, whom Ratner directed in the film Tower Heist and recruited to serve as the host of this year's Oscars, also withdrew from the show this morning, leaving things in disarray. As THR reported this morning, Academy president Tom Sherak reached out to Brian Grazer, the 60-year-old producer and co-chief of Imagine Entertainment, about the job -- but that communication may have taken place before Murphy withdrew from the show. Grazer, who won the best picture Oscar for A Beautiful Mind (2001), made a lot of sense when Murphy was still on-board: he served as a producer on Tower Heist and was credited by the actor with "saving" the film when it ran into trouble during development. It is less clear, though, if he'd still be needed or amenable now that the circumstances have changed. THR has been surveying the industry for ideas about other candidates whom the Academy might tap if things don't work out with Grazer. Two leading possibilities include... Scott Sanders, the 54-year-old theater producer, who was said to be a finalist for this year's job before the decision was made to go with Ratner. Sanders, who won a Tony for producing the one-woman show Elaine Stritch: At Liberty (2002), comes highly recommended by Academy favorites Quincy Jones, Harvey Weinstein, and Oprah Winfrey, with whom he produced the hit Broadway musical adaptation of The Color Purple, which scored 11 Tony nods. Bill Condon, the 56-year-old writer/director, who won the best adapted screenplay Oscar for Gods & Monsters (1998), was nominated for it again for Chicago (2002), and subsequently directed Murphy in Dreamgirls (2006), for which the actor received the lone Oscar nomination of his career. Moreover, Condon served as the executive producer of the 81st Academy Awards, which was hosted by Hugh Jackman and was one of the best Oscar shows in recent memory. (Laurence Mark was the producer.) Of course, the Academy might always reach out again to past Oscar show producers like Bruce Cohen, Laurence Mark, Joe Roth, and Adam Shankman, who could hit the ground running. Oscars 2012

Why YouTube Was Asked for Another Question in Viacom Appeal (Analysis)
The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals is presently weighing whether a federal judge wrongfully overlooked Viacom's large copyright breach suit against YouTube. Lately, the parties contended their unique sides, but following a hearing found the final outcome, the three-judge panel had another question for YouTube.our editor recommendsDisney, YouTube to Partner on Original Video SeriesViacom, Google Get Ready For Fight in Appeals Court Over YouTube Copyright Issues Will YouTube's Hollywood Experiment Pay back?Information Corp's IGN, Shine Group Partner for YouTube Gaming Funnel START (Exclusive Q&A) The appeals court wants to know whether and the way the "danger signal understanding provision would apply" under YouTube's interpretation of copyright law. What is the danger signal understanding provision? Digital Millennium Copyright Act discusses conditions through which service companies have "safe harbor" from copyright liability. Virtually everyone confirms when an Internet service provider like YouTube will receive a takedown notice and responds expeditiously to eliminate infringing material, it's safe. But where the parties disagree is at interpretation the sentence inside the statute that talks about liability for ISPs when no takedown notices are sent, where an Internet service provider doesn't have "actual understanding" of infringing material, nevertheless it can invariably be "alert to particulars or problems that infringing activity is apparent.Inch This really is what is known as the danger signal understanding provision. The question the 2nd Circuit keeps asking in several forms: What obligations do ISPs truly have? Now, the idol idol judges have pointedly pressed YouTube for just about any direct reaction to the issue of copyright breach awareness beyond a takedown notice. It's a somewhat tricky question for YouTube because its lawyers have virtually mentioned it's nearly entirely the copyright holder's responsibility to determine an Internet service provider about infringing material. We're saying "nearly entirely" instead of "completely" because YouTube's lawyers can't pretend the danger signal understanding provision wasn't ever written. In hisresponseto the 2nd Circuit, YouTube's lawyer Andrew Schapiro doesn't hypothesize an issue where the danger signal understanding provision is certainly triggered, but he's certainly comfortable talking about if the isn't triggered: Anytime an Internet service provider sees a thing that's under an apparent and particular breach Anytime an Internet service provider sees somethingthat requires analysis This case Does that leave any room for your danger signal understanding provision being truly significant? Who knows, but as Schapiro highlights, other courts (Veoh, MP3Tunes, etc.) now employ this narrow interpretation. Viacom will can produce a rebuttal and supply its logic behind why Congress stood a apparent purpose when writing up this part of the DMCA. Matias Ponce...Got the Part
Matias Ponce...Got the Part Role: Cupcakes in 'Short Eyes,' a union-nonunion play By Sarah McKinley Oakes November 5, 2011 Matias Ponce Most actors can point to a particular role they'd love to play, or a play they've always dreamed of acting in. For Matias Ponce, that play was "Short Eyes," the 1975 Tony Award winner written by Miguel Piero during his incarceration for armed robbery. "When I was 16, I saw the film 'Piero' about the playwright [Miguel Piero]," Ponce remembers. "It's all about his life and what he went through when he was locked up, and how he started writing his plays. I got really hooked on the playwright and read 'Short Eyes' and realized there was a character I'd love the opportunity to play." Director Julian Acosta feels similarly excited about the play. "It's a kind of a seminal play in theater history," Acosta explains. "It's the first play by a Latino playwright ever to be produced on Broadway, and it's very rarely produced. It's one of those shows that everybody has either heard of or read but not very many people have ever been able to see. It was written in prison; it's a play that's very near and dear to my heart and to a lot of people."Ponce saw the notice for "Short Eyes" in the Aug. 18 issue of Back Stage, and in addition to working on his monologue he reread the play before going to the open call. He was called in to read a second time that day and left feeling good about his chances. But at the second callback, a few days later, Ponce made a mistake he thought might cost him the role. "I did the first scene on book," Ponce recalls. "But I had been trying to get both scenes down word for word, just trying to have it really prepared. So when he asked me to do the second scene, I wanted to be a little cocky, and I put the book down. And then right in the middle I got stuck, which is one of the worst things you can do. [Acosta] told me, 'Pick your book up; take a breath; do it again.' So I did what I was told, and I went at it, and I completed it. And then soon as I got home I put the book back on my shelf and moved on." But what Acosta saw at the callback was an actor who was open to taking adjustment and direction, and the director offered him the part. Ponce, who started acting in commercials as a child in Ohio, moved to L.A. two years ago to pursue acting. Since arriving, he has kept busy, joining the Lonny Chapman Theatre at the Group Rep in the NoHo Arts District and paying his actor dues doing background work, student films, and a reenactment show for the Discovery Channel. He has also kept up with his studies, most recently attending classes at Anthony Meindl's Actor Workshop.Though Ponce enjoys his work with TV and film, his true love is theater. "I'd really like to get my Equity card and do more professional theaterstart getting my feet wet with the big leagues and work with people who have more experience than I do," he says. "I guess 'cause it's my background, and I know L.A.'s big on TV and film, but there are opportunities in L.A. for doing good theater." Acosta thinks Ponce has what it takes. "His willingness, his spirit, and his open heartthat goes a long way," he says.Has Back Stage helped you get cast in the past year? We'd love to tell your story. New Underworld: Awakening Trailer Online
It's a whole new war...The teaser hit the web back in August, but now the full trailer for Underworld: Awakening has arrived online and can be watched below. This time, the story rockets forward to 12 years after the events of Underworld: Evolution, and finds Selene (Kate Beckinsale, back in the vinyl catsuit) finally escaping from coma-ridden captivity to discover that the world she knew has changed forever.Humanity, you see, has finally cottoned on to the idea that vampires and Lycans exist. Instead of taking one side and wiping out the other, we've somewhat logically decided that both are a terrible threat that must be dealt with. Naturally, that means a big ol' battle between the three races, with Selene and Eve, (India Eisley) the hybrid daughter she's only just met, caught in the middle.Plus there's also a rather nasty Lycan beastie running around, one who is considerably bigger than his cousins...With Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein on directing chores and the likes of Charles Dance, Michael Ealy, Scott Speedman and Stephen Rea also in the cast, Underworld: Awakening will be out on January 20.

'Extra' good rankings in New You are able to, Chicago
'Extra' has seen a rankings spike among its key demographic in NY and Chicago, but is lower in L.A., where it is affected with weak lead-inches.Warner Bros.' lengthy-running entertainment magazine, "Extra," seems to become getting an additional-good season.Extra expires 42% one of the show's key demographic, women 25-54, on WNBC NY at 7:30 p.m., during Chicago it's enhanced 63% for the reason that same demo. In homes, "Extra" expires 15% year upon year across all its metered marketplaces, second simply to CBS Television Distribution's "Entertainment Tonight," that has elevated 17% year upon year. More often than not, a syndicated show's improvement could be credited to a number of factors, including time-period upgrades, better lead-inches and from time to time better content, although that last factor is subjective, and difficult to measure. But "Extra" continues to be playing up its NY coverage, delivering anchors Mario Lopez and Maria Menounos to Manhattan every month to host. It's also hired Gotham icon Jesse Trump to frequently co-host the show with regular NY-based correspondent A.J. Calloway, which season the show has damaged tales about noted NYers Rosie O'Donnell's new girlfriend contributing to Alec Baldwin's potential run for mayor."Extra's" gains in Chicago go submit hands using the move of Warner Bros.' "Ellen" to three p.m. on NBC's WMAQ. "Ellen" expires 50% in the new period of time, which appears to become aiding both "Extra" at 4 p.m. and also the station's local news at 5 p.m. The main one major market where "Extra" is not faring so well is on KNBC La, in which the show has dropped 38% among women 25-54, although it's up 13% in homes for the reason that market."Extra" is La-based, so it ought to be attractive to La audiences however, the implies that lead directly into "Extra" -- "We the folks With Gloria Allred" at 2 p.m., "Nate Berkus" at 3 p.m., "Ellen" at 4 p.m., the neighborhood news at 5 and 6 p.m., and also the "NBC Nightly News" at 6:30 p.m., have lost audiences within the L.A. market this year, which makes it no surprise that "Extra" is following suit. George Clooney's Problem (Do Not Possess A Pity Party for Him!)
This story first came out inside the November. 4 problem in the Hollywood Reporter.our editor recommendsGeorge Clooney Is Only Able To Be Out-Pranked By Kaira Pitt States DamonNY Film Festival: George Clooney Hits 'The Descendants' Premiere With Stacy KeiblerGeorge Clooney States He'll not Run For Office (Video)Dems versus. Republicans: Stars they Wont Pay to find out Movies They Hate and Love (Poll) George Clooney could possibly get to get lots of time inside the shower through the approaching several days. Oscar campaigning makes him "type of feel unclean," he bellyached a few several days back. Or was that merely a mock complaint? With Clooney, a substantial guy (witness his campaign against genocide in Sudan) which has perfected the knack of never seeming to think about themselves too seriously, you will not ever define. However, if it calls for juggling competing honours campaigns, Clooney is on familiar ground. Six in the past, he'd two politically designed films in play: Syriana (through which he starred) and Evening, and All The Best (they co-written, directed and socialized in). He handled to separate his marketing efforts involving the two, without slighting either. PHOTOS: George Clooney: Career in Pictures The finish result will be a combined eight Academy nominations for your two movies, with Clooney acquiring mentions for pointing and co-writing Evening and taking home the supporting actor Oscar for his worn-lower CIA agent in Syriana. This year, it's under deja vu once more. Nevertheless the pattern can be compared. Clooney has one movie, the backroom political drama The Ides of March, he co-written, directed and produced too as with they features a supporting role just like a governor with presidential aspirations. Which he's another, author-director Alexander Payne's The Descendants, through which Clooney stars just like a guy fighting to keep both his immediate and relatives from spinning uncontrollable. PHOTOS: The Scene within the Venice Film Festival Getting two films up for consideration can present problems. A year ago, Leonardo DiCaprio, a much more reticent public personality than Clooney, tried to voice equal support for Shutter Island and Beginning. But instead of being named best actor for either, he was famous for neither. Clooney doesn't face that predicament, though. The groups through which he'll contend are clearly delineated. In Descendants, he's within the forefront. In Ides, he's delivering support to Ryan Gosling's political operative -- really, Clooney's character didn't even are available in happens experience the movie relies. States among Clooney's affiliate marketers, "The Two movies are two different canvasses." In addition, The brand new the new sony, which opened up up Ides on March. 7, and Fox Searchlight, which will begin to unveil Descendants on November. 18, are actually playing nice round the festival circuit: Ides opened up in Venice Telluride got Descendants both movies examined on successive nights in Toronto and London and Descendants was congratulated since the closing-nightfeature within the NY Film Festival. Clooney designated the initial phase of his honours bid by accepting Actor of year honorsfor Descendants within the Hollywood Film Honours on March. 24. Will both movies go the space? At this time, Descendants, which acquired three Gotham noms, looks being building momentum. Ides, which designed a decent $24 million through its initial few weekends of release, is among several high-profile nominees The brand new the new sony will area, but Descendants is shaping as bank card inside the pack of Searchlight's honours hopefuls. Fox's niche unit expects to transmit about 30,000 screeners for the industry's honours groups. But even if Clooney doesn't ultimately get writing or pointing Oscar noms for Ides -- which he faces stiff competition in people groups -- the fact the opportunity continues to be spoken about adds to his gravitas, strengthening his bid for Descendants. It's just like what rocket scientists call the slingshot effect: Send a spacecraft around the quick loop around a distant planet, as well as the planet's gravitational pressure will hurl the spacecraft farther into space. Voters amazed by Clooney's performance in Descendants might be even a lot more when reminded of his work behind the digital camera in Ides. Rather than getting rid of each other out, the flicks could comparable to a powerful one-two punch, with Clooney showing itself to become the most effective actor victor. Martin Scorsese in Early Talks to Direct 'The Snowman'
When it comes to Martin Scorsese and his future directing projects, the acclaimed director seems to take a page from Lay's potato chips: he can't have just one. Variety reports that the Oscar-winning Scorsese is in early talks to direct 'The Snowman,' an adaptation of Norwegian novelist Jo Nesbo's acclaimed novel. Great! But maybe 'The Snowman' should take a number. Over the last couple of years, Scorsese has seen his name attached to a host of major projects: a remake of 'The Gambler' with Leonardo DiCaprio; an adaptation of 'The Wolf of Wall Street' with Leonardo DiCaprio; a biopic about Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, perhaps with Leonardo DiCaprio; 'The Irishman,' with Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino; 'Silence,' a film about Jesuit monks in 17th century Japan with Daniel Day-Lewis and Benicio Del Toro; and 'Furious Love,' about the romance between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Which is to say: don't be surprised if Scorsese's involvement with 'The Snowman' melts away after a few years. Based on Nesbo's Harry Hole series, 'The Snowman' is set in Norway and focuses on a serial killer who attacks women. Working Title -- the production company behind 'Love Actually' and the upcoming 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' -- hopes that the film could have franchise potential, a la 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.' The Nesbo books have sold 5 million copies worldwide. Scorsese will next direct 'Hugo,' out on Nov. 23. [via Variety] [Photo: Getty] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook RELATED

Rob Zombie adds one of The Brady Bunch to Lords Of Salem
Rob Zombie's upcomingThe Lords of Salem has a growing all-star cast, which already includes the likes of Barbara Crampton, Jeff Daniel Phillips, Bruce Davidson, Sheri Moon Zombie, Billy Drago and Meg Foster. But it seems that Mr Zombie is gratifying his nostalgic side by adding yet another familiar face to the bill."Pork chops and applesauce head to Salem! What the fuck does that mean? Of course it means Christopher Knight has joined our group.""Chris plays Keith Williams aka Lobster Joe the host of Lobster Joe's Fishy Fun Show a staple of local Salem television."Christopher Knight'smost recognisable role is Peter Brady from the infamous The Brady Bunch. Yep, that Brady Bunch. Now, we know that Zombie is a pop-culture fiend, but we kind of assumed his tastes were a little more, well, fiendish.Having said that, the thought of a young Zombie singing along to the Brady Bunch theme tune every Friday night fills us with quite a lot of giddy joy.The Lords of Salem is about a DJ who accidentally unleashes an evil curse onto the titular town, which was famously the site of several witchcraft trials in the 17th Century. The Lords of Salemwill be released in 2012. And we're sure it'll be as relentlessly bleak as Zombie's previous flicks, even if it does now involve a Brady.

Zombieland to become TV series?
"Zombieland is introduced for you personally before an energetic studio audience." We're really wanting that is not how a TV series starts, with Pals-style laughter polluting the black humour, but apparently Zombieland is headed for the small screen.A follow-up for the 2009 hit comedy has elevated the works well with sometime now but even director Ruben Fleischer recently mentioned he doesn't think it will happen. While using season two TV premiere in the Walking Dead breaking records now, it seems someone has put two and a pair of together making four. By four we mean a Zombieland TV series.Early word is always that Fox TV has something a great deal a lot more like a sitcom in your thoughts. Sounds to us such as this particular two plus two can make five. The first movie's writing duo of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are taking part while using project plus it appears like they could be pretty busy. The GI Joe 2 and Deadpool authors will also be hired by Hasbro to pen the toy company's Micronauts movie.Micronauts will probably be created by Qq Abrams's Bad Robot production company and you'll be good Japanese toys - first released as Microman in 1974 - as well as the 1979 comic-book series.

Georgette Howard - Harriet Harris
George Howard - Howard McGillin
Marty Kaufman - David JosefsbergBroadway comes to New Brunswick with the new musical comedy "It Shoulda Been You." The cast -- headed by Tyne Daly and Harriet Harris, with the likes of Howard McGillin and Edward Hibbert in support -- is impressive. Design team consists of top-level names Anna Louizos, William Ivey Long and Ken Billington. David Hyde Pierce makes what seems to be his directing debut, and producers Scott Landis, Michael Hanel and Daryl Roth are attached. With all this, "It Shoulda Been You" shoulda been good. The score is weak, though, and the book would have been a scream back in 1965. What we have here is "Abie's Irish Rose" all over again. The fact that few people remember that long-running hit indicates just how past-dated "It Shoulda Been You" is; later sitcom models include "The Mothers-in-Law" and "Bridget Loves Bernie." Jewish girl weds Catholic boy, with the cliche-Jewish mama (Daly) pitted against the tippling WASP mother (Harris); they even reprise those "Abie" jokes about the rabbi and the priest. This is "Love Boat" territory, all in all; but is there still an audience for "The Love Boat"? The authors eventually make things more contemporary, but one twist at the first act curtain and a rapid-and-funny final twenty minutes aren't enough. Music comes from Barbara Anselmi, who also takes credit for the concept. The book is by TV-scribe Brian Hargrove; he also writes half the lyrics, with the rest coming from a committee of five receiving title-page credit. (That's a lot of writers for gems like "It shoulda been you, at least you're a Jew.") There are a very few reasonably effective songs along the way, but we have to wait until the final number for a good one, a quartet for the parents called "That's Family." The actors go all out to make things enjoyable; each and every one of the 13 brightens the stage. Daly breezes through her role as the Jewish mother to end all Jewish mothers, although people who saw her in last season's "Master Class" know that she is capable of far more. Harris makes a perfect foil, and is wildly funny; so are McGillin and Richard Kline as the two husbands. Leading the pack and carrying the show is the little-known Lisa Howard -- a Drama Desk Award-winner for "The 25th Annual Putnam Valley Spelling Bee" -- as sister of the bride. When she sings a song, it gets sung. Hyde Pierce has his actors deliver the jokes effectively and has a knack for farcical staging, while choreographer Noah Racey makes do with his few opportunities. Let it be noted that the George Street subscribers seem to be eating it up. The five-week run is a virtual sellout, but then they are getting Broadway stars and production values for low prices without making the hourlong drive into town and paying for parking. "It Shoulda Been You" should do fine with upper middle-class Jewish seniors -- there were convulsive shrieks all four times the bridegroom offered mangled Yiddish ("keena ahora") -- but this is a shrinking demographic. How does such a slight entertainment as "It Shoulda Been You" get a gilt-edged, first-class mounting at a small regional like George Street? One guesses that Hyde Pierce, husband of lyricist/librettist Hargrove, pulled strings and called friends. The cast seems to be having a grand time, at least, and their clowning more than compensates for the weary writing.Set, Anna Louizos; costumes, William Ivey Long; lighting, Ken Billington; sound, Acme Sound Partners; orchestrations, Doug Besterman; production stage manager, Thomas Clewell. Watching Fox go through negotiations to ultimately renew "The Simpsons" through a 25th season -- while sibling Fox News Channel engages in chest-thumping over its 15th anniversary -- represents two sides of an increasingly common modern media scenario.Faced with a choice between looking ahead or honoring history, tradition is almost invariably dismissed as the title of a song from "Fiddler on the Roof," with the occasional exception.Think about ABC execs deciding to jettison the network's decades-old daytime soaps "All My Children" and "One Life to Live," opting to pursue cheaper talk alternatives. NBC did much the same by ending "Law & Order" just short of breaking the endurance record for drama series held by "Gunsmoke" -- a milestone that meant something to producer Dick Wolf but not so much to the network's then-management, a half-dozen regimes removed from the program's inception. In the midst of Fox's contract talks with "The Simpsons" cast, a source echoed this point by saying of the entertainment division's current brass, "What's 'The Simpsons' mean to them? It's not like they developed it."Such scenarios admittedly set up a tough situation for executives. They can't be shackled by the past -- especially given how fast the business is changing -- and usually derive less credit from shepherding someone else's development than launching franchises of their own.Yet a more subtle aspect of this has to do with the over-arching preference for the new. Because everything in media dictates younger is good -- starting with demographic pressure across all ad-supported channels -- the corollary is that older, or anything smacking of it, must be bad.Execs have thus been programmed not to get emotionally invested in history. Besides, few of them have much longevity in their present jobs, making it hard to get agitated about programs that have run decades -- or their vocal fans -- when tenures in top media posts are so frequently measured in annual increments of two and three.By contrast, it's probably not an accident some of the more successful orgs boast greater stability than competitors.Underlying Fox News' triumphant end zone dance -- which even included making some of its normally press-shy anchors available to (gasp) the mainstream media -- is Roger Ailes commemorating his storied run, having transformed his Clinton-era creation into the dominant force in conservative politics. And like many powerful media figures, the Fox News CEO can't resist a bit of gloating -- and appears to possess a vivid memory of anyone who ever slighted or second-guessed him along the way.As for the broadcast networks, it's no accident CBS remains a model of efficiency in primetime. Easily the most stable network operation, the company isn't hidebound by tradition but does possess a strong sense of it.Moreover, thanks to the conspicuous lack of turnover under CEO Leslie Moonves, the company not only retains a sense of its past but actually has kept a team in place long enough to claim a significant slice of the network's history as its own. (CBS News helps illustrate this point as well, if only by juxtaposing "60 Minutes'" legendary durability with the repeated fits and starts that have characterized other aspects of the division.)It would be simplistic to say consistency alone is a hallmark of success, and it's easy to see the negative consequences of hanging around too long, having witnessed execs and programs fade the way an aging ballplayer loses his fastball or first step. There's also a specific rationale behind questioning the viability of long-running TV shows, which -- thanks to hefty raises generated through earlier renewals -- often cost far more to produce than new programs would.Despite the logic in adapting to changing circumstances, however, it's almost always short-sighted to be arbitrary or insensitive when severing tiesto habit and history, or allow the lack of a personal stake to result in blithely discarding tradition. Oscar Index: Extremely Artist and Incredibly Horse
It’s week three of the 2011-12 Oscar Index, and the latest measurements, readings and conclusions are in from Movieline’s Institute for the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics. And aside from a few startling exceptions, they don’t look that different than the ones disseminated here last week. But make no mistake: Like it or not, stuff is happening! Read on for the latest developments. [Click the graphs for full-size images.] The Leading 10: 1. War Horse 2. The Artist 3. The Descendants 4. Moneyball 5. The Ides of March 6. J. Edgar 7. The Help 8. Midnight in Paris 9. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close 10. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy Outsiders: The Tree of Life, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Iron Lady So last week, I finished up Oscar Index and then walked up to my local watering hole, where I proceeded, as usual, to ruthlessly drown the floating heads and other nightmarish visions that invade my consciousness in the feature’s immediate aftermath. And one of my friends, a pretty serious cinephile, says, “Yeah, I saw Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.” “Say whaaaa?”, I said. “I saw Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” this friend repeated, explaining having attended a test screening here in NY over the preceding weekend. Pretty much everything this friend proceeded to tell me wound up corroborating another report from the same screening: Specifically, that Stephen Daldry’s adaptation of the Jonathan Safran Foer bestseller about a newly fatherless boy’s post-9/11 experience is really sad and affecting and looooong and contains Oscar-caliber work from Sandra Bullock and Max von Sydow. “Von Sydow?”, I said. “Say whaaaa?” More on the actors in a bit, but the bottom line is that with a few judicious trims, early word from actual viewers and our first glimpse at the film’s trailer suggests that Extremely Loud will supply the spirited emo boost Paramount is looking for in this year’s Oscar race. Which only affirms the suspicions of many Oscar-watchers who’ve long presumed the Scott Rudin production was the snake in the shimmering gold awards-season grass. Some sniffed at the trailer in particular as persuasive but inconclusive evidence of Oscar-worthiness, but come on. One look at the new War Horse trailer proves that if studio marketing drips like Oscar bait and smells like Oscar bait, then it’s Oscar bait. And with the Rudin/Daldry/Tom Hanks trinity at its core (to say nothing of Bullock and von Sydow and young X-factor Thomas Horn), you won’t likely go broke betting on it to at least make the Best Picture cut. Nevertheless, don’t think that anything yet comes close to matching War Horse’s profile. Surprisingly or not (mostly not), the nearest may now be The Artist, Michel Hazanavicius’s silent, audience-pleasing tribute to vintage Hollywood. As foreseen last week, master awards-pizzaiolo Harvey Weinstein is crafting one of his finest pies to date, with zesty punditry from Sasha Stone and Nathaniel Rogers among others boosting the Oscar flavor. Moreover, check out Harvey’s toppings at the moment, including the mogul’s own exhorting of Ides of March — which is shaping up for a middling critical and commercial response this weekend — as the film to beat in this year’s race. Genius! Nothing like foisting high expectations on a movie that won’t deliver them. That’s not to say that Harvey didn’t like it! But it’s a delicious insight into what he thinks his real competition is, at least in this early stage. Moneyball, meanwhile, could use that kind of seasoning: Last week’s reported Academy goodwill has deteriorated into guys like Scott Feinberg presenting this kind of statistic as encouraging news: “Moneyball, which opened at #2 at the box-office last weekend with nearly $20 million in sales, earned 43% less this Friday than it did last Friday, only a 3% worse drop-off than the one experienced by The Social Network last year.” Uh, what? Then there are the doubts as to whether or not the Academy will really go for a baseball movie, or the proposal that it could advance on the strength of guild-awards recognition, and it all just seems kind of… bleak. Unlike its subject, Moneyball will need more than hard numbers to get by the competition this fall. It needs longevity, visibility and some considerable luck. Maybe it can start with Harvey Weinstein not suggesting it will go all the way. The Leading 5: 1. Steven Spielberg, War Horse 2. Alexander Payne, The Descendants 3. Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist 4. Clint Eastwood, J. Edgar 5. Stephen Daldry, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close Outsiders: David Fincher, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo; George Clooney, The Ides of March; Bennett Miller, Moneyball; Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris; Tomas Alfredson, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; Tate Taylor, The Help; David Cronenberg, A Dangerous Method On the basis of their films’ Index boosts alone, Hazanavicius and Daldry were the week’s big directing beneficiaries, while Clooney is like, “Harvey, for Christ’s sake, stop it, already.” Relax, George! You’ve still got The Descendants, for which Payne remains a consistent darling in this category and for which you are a front runner for acting. Don’t get greedy!
CBS cruises in Week 2
'NCIS'Fox's "New Girl" stood as Tuesday's No. 1 show in 18-49.
CBS rode a strong week behind "Two and a Half Men," above, and top-rated drama "NCIS." Nielsen ratings chart, page 14.
CBS rode a strong week behind "Two and a Half Men," above, and top-rated drama "NCIS." Nielsen ratings chart, page 14.
Riding TV's top-rated drama ("NCIS") and comedy ("Two and a Half Men"), CBS cruised to victory in key demos for the second week of the season. The Eye got good production out of most of its newbies and claimed six of the week's top 10 programs in adults 18-49 -- the most for any network in Week 2 since NBC in 2003. Fox too had another good week, and its new shows are holding up best relative to their premieres.Through two weeks, CBS and Fox were neck and neck among adults 18-49, with the Eye roughly on par with last year and Fox -- aided mostly by "The X Factor" -- up by about 15%. ABC and NBC are in a tight battle for third, with the Alphabet off slightly vs. last year and the Peacock down about 10%.CBS is the clear leader in adults 25-54 and total viewers. Most impressive newcomers after multiple airings are Fox's "New Girl" and CBS' "2 Broke Girls." ABC's "Revenge" and "Pan Am" held up well enough in their second outings to suggest they could be around a while, as did CBS dramas "Person of Interest" and "Unforgettable." And NBC has something of a spark on Wednesday with "Up All Night."Peacock has already pulled the plug on "The Playboy Club," while others not looking so hot are ABC's "Charlie's Angels" and NBC's "Free Agents" and "Prime Suspect." Looking at the Nielsens for the Sept. 26-Oct. 2 frame, CBS led in adults 18-49 with a 3.2 rating/9 share, with Fox a solid second (2.8/8) and NBC (2.4/7) and ABC (2.4/6) tied for third. The Eye won by 3 shares over Fox in adults 25-54 and ran away in total viewers (12.2 million to 8.7 million for ABC).For CBS, the Ashton Kutcher-led "Two and a Half Men" held up well in its second week (7.4/17 in 18-49, 20.52m) -- the frame's No. 1 show in 25-54 (8.7/18) and total viewers -- and still looked strong in its third try. TV's No. 1 comedy block included "How I Met Your Mother" (4.5/12, 10.50m), the timeslot debut of "2 Broke Girls" (4.6/12, 11.75m) and the season opener of "Mike & Molly" (4.8/11, 13.86m)."Hawaii Five-0" (3.2/8, 11.26m) topped its drama competish in demos too, as the Eye won the 10:30 p.m. half-hour leading into the late local news on all five weeknights in adults 25-54.In their second weeks, rookies "Unforgettable" (2.5/7, 12.43m), "Person of Interest" (2.7/7, 12.51m) and "A Gifted Man" (1.2/4, 8.18m) dropped off in the standard 10%-15% range. But one newbie, Thursday half-hour "How to Be a Gentleman" (2.7/8, 8.98m), could be in danger after its preem last week lost a big chunk of its lead-in from "The Big Bang Theory" (4.9/15, 14.74m)."NCIS" was the week's No. 1 drama (4.2/12, 19.51m), beating Fox's "Glee" head-to-head by 2 shares in 18-49. Excluding sports, CBS claimed six of the top eight programs among adults 18-49 and seven of eight in 25-54.Fox has seen impressive second-week holds for its newbies, including "New Girl" (4.5/11, 9.28m), down just 7%. The laffer built on its lead-in from a declining but still potent "Glee" (3.7/10, 8.60m) and stood as Tuesday's No. 1 show in 18-49."X Factor," also down 7% week to week, won its two-hour blocks on Wednesday (4.1/11, 11.86m) and Thursday (5.7/15, 13.45m), losing in 18-49 only to "Modern Family" and "Big Bang Theory." And "Terra Nova" opened with solid but unspectacular numbers (3.1/8, 9.22m) however earned points by holding up well in its second outing.ABC had only three of the top 25 shows in 18-49, with "Modern Family" (5.7/15, 13.45m) up vs. last year while vets "Grey's Anatomy" (3.6/9, 10.20m) and "Dancing With the Stars" (3.3/8, 16.23m) were down.Among rookies, "Charlie's Angels" looks to be in trouble (1.5/4, 7.11m), but "Revenge" (2.7/7, 8.54m) and "Pan Am" (2.6/6, 7.76m) are faring better. And in its debut, Wednesday comedy "Suburgatory" (3.3/9, 9.81m) built on its lead-in from "The Middle" (2.7/8, 8.68m).NBC was again saved by "Sunday Night Football" (7.7/19, 18.90m for Jets-Ravens), the week's No. 1 show in 18-49. Its only otheronly other top-25 show was "The Office" (3.5/9, 6.70m), while the Thursday comedy's 9:30 p.m. leadout "Whitney" (2.5/6, 5.40m) dropped off in its second week but still looked OK. Second-year Wednesday drama "Harry's Law" (1.2/3, 7.63m) was the net's most-watched entertainment series, but is a demo laggard following the even lower-rated new half-hour "Free Agents" (1.0/3, 3.07m). Leading into "Free" was the new "Up All Night" (2.1/6, 5.32m), which dropped 13% week to week but is still a bright spot.Univision was fifth in 18-49 (1.7/5), winning Friday for the fifth straight week. And CW continues to show sizable declines even though newcomers "Hart of Dixie" (0.8/2, 1.88m in its preem) and "Ringer" (0.9/2, 1.98m in its third week) built on their lead-ins, and Thursday's "The Secret Circle" (1.0/2, 2.12m) is a good fit with "The Vampire Diaries" (1.3/4, 2.74m). On Monday of this week, CBS rolled as "Two and a Half Men" (6.2/14, 17.71m) declined by 16% but is still likely to be the No. 1 entertainment series of the week in demos. And "2 Broke Girls" (4.5/11, 11.42m) matched its "How I Met Your Mother" demo lead-in (4.5/12, 10.39m). At Fox, "Terra Nova" (3.1/8, 8.73m) retained its week-ago demo aud, and "House" kicked off its eighth season in a new 9 o'clock timeslot (3.9/9, 9.78m), down just 7% from last year.ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" (3.1/7, 16.56m) declined further, while NBC's "The Sing Off" was up a tick (1.8/4, 4.89m).On the sports side, ESPN's "Monday Night Football" (4.5/11 in 18-49, 10.84m for Colts-Buccaneers) topped TBS' baseball playoff game between the Tigers and Yankees (2.1/5, 6.05m). 'Moneyball' Author Michael Lewis on Oscar Hopes, Coping With Kaira Pitt and also the New 'Liar's Poker' Script (Q&A)
The brand new the new sony Pictures Using the wealth from the Blind Side now Moneyball, which opened up as much as $19.5 million the 2009 weekend, Michael Lewis is among Hollywood's most widely used (and several unconventional) authors. The man behind such nonfiction bestsellers as 2010's The Big Short is setting his sights around the script. Warner Bros. has hired Lewis to pen an adaptation of his 1989 book Liar's Poker, they written about his time just like a bond trader at Salomon Bros. inside the high-flying 80s. Lewis spoke with THR just before the release of his latest book, Boomerang: Travels inside the New Under-developed. The Hollywood Reporter:Simply how much had you been mixed up in Moneyballmovie? Michael Lewis: Hardly whatsoever. The specific feeling of folks that make movies is always that everybody might be best once the author was dead. The ultimate factor they might require is certainly a writer experimenting bitching and moaning by what they are doing to his art. Which I truly realize that. Since they basically have to break it and remake it, they've arrived at trigger on their own. I'd've been bothered essentially thought they needed me for some reason. However with nevertheless, I am alive. Who would like to be rude, nobody wants me saying "Nobody consulted me," although I swore on their behalf I didn't care. And then we had this extended and polite interaction. I'd lots of conversations with producers, with studio professionals, with [director] Bennett Burns, with Kaira Pitt. I visited the set a couple of occasions, Someone said scripts in addition to gave solicited advice, but to date as Let me tell none of the had any effect whatsoever. Fortunately they'd their unique ideas in what they were doing, therefore i arrived at be pals wonderful these people which i truly admire whatever they did however had nothing associated with it. PHOTOS: 'Moneyball' Premiere in Concord THR: You know, the film was being directed by Steven Soderbergh before new the new sony abruptly attracted the plug on that version in the movie. Do you have a feeling of how the Soderbergh and Burns versions differ? Lewis: I don't -- that's the primary one script I never saw, because the studio didn't notice until a couple of days just before being made to shoot. Therefore I don't have idea. Really the only factor that we did hear is always that [statistician] Bill James would be described as a kids favourite. Aside from that, I don't know. THR: For you personally, what's the most crucial deviation involving the book as well as the movie? Lewis: One large factor: They needed the story from the idea and switched it into the story from the guy. The story in the guy influences book, nevertheless the idea isn't subsumed inside the guy inside the book that is inside the movie. That's the finest factor -- the relative requirement for Billy Beane for the story. He's more valuable inside the movie than he influences book. He's very important inside the book, nevertheless it just can get amped up a lot more and therefore all activities are reduced. THR: You mean some specifics are changed. Lewis: There's grounds with this particular. I decided one pitcher then one hitter: Hatteberg and Bradford, that are inside the movie, as you illustration of the idea. I decided them not simply because they star pitchers didn't illustrate this idea however when I obtained for the team people understood the worth, the visitors would've thought they formerly understood their value. There has been these two players -- Scott Hatteberg and Chad Bradford -- who everyone didn't appreciate the requirement for yet. Therefore I had the element of surprise inside. It comprises a sizable deal in regards to the both of them, which's why to kinda surprise the visitors as well as the movie just follows it. FILM REVIEW: 'Moneyball' THR: How surprised had you been in regards to the casting? Lewis: I used to be jarred due to it initially initially when i first heard it, after which it I believed, "My god, it might be brilliant." [Jonah Hill] is physically so unlike everybody else in this atmosphere that it provides a metaphoric energy and delay fantastically. His performance is spectacular. He in some manner handles to capture this type of distance within the culture he's a part of. The film really found existence the moment Kaira Pitt meets Jonah Hill. THR: Did Kaira or Jonah request you for help? Lewis: They went to the equine's mouth. They visited Paul DePodesta and Billy Beane to uncover whatever they were enjoy. Kaira spent lots of time with Billy, and so they remained with scouts [together with other front office personnel]. They went to baseball for research. THR: Reveal relating to your interaction with Pitt. Lewis: I met him round the set combined with a few e-mail trades with him. He described when he see the book he increased being kinda passionate about this which he'd take action kinda no matter what plus it just needed an extremely very long time to get rid of stuff that were in the way. He was thinking about a lot of things. That is more than a 1-evening stand. He bought my last book, The Big Short, as well as Vital. We discussed a variety of things. EXCLUSIVE: 'Moneyball' Author Michael Lewis to Script 'Liar's Poker' for Warner Bros. THR: What's the status of the project? Lewis: He's got a script, and apparently it's great. I haven't seen it. THR: What's next to suit your needs? Lewis: Oddly, I've just made the decision to create Liar's Poker for Warner Bros. therefore i'm prone to spend the next two several days doing that. Maybe it'll be a race. THR: May be the first script? Lewis: No. I merely handed in the TV pilot for just about any drama series to Cinemax. I written a script for universal with Scott Rosenberg referred to as Bit Player, that's still kicking around. I written a script for Fox that kinda elevated in the New New Factor. I written two TV aircraft aircraft pilots for CBS then one for TNT. STORY: 'Moneyball': Just what the Moviegoers Say THR: What's the finest distinction between scripts and flicks to suit your needs? Lewis: The amount of compression that's needed. A script feels as if a short story and books appear just like a novel. The amount of compression as well as the understanding of a myriad of non-verbal information. Moneyball shows this. Kaira Pitt just in facial expressions can get across 500 words of description inside the book. So that it's only a idea of the products might be performed by others. I am in a position to't really say I have screenwriting chops. Cinemax really loved my TV pilot and possibly we're can make that, but not one other activities are actually made. THR: How did your understanding about Moneyballbeing converted to a film change from The Blind Side? Lewis: They are almost mirror images. The Blind Side, which made an appearance quite apparent in my opinion to become movie, got bought by Fox just like a Jennifer Aniston vehicle, then when Jennifer Aniston didn't might like to do it they lost interest. John Lee Hancock authored a script and trundled everything over town and everybody mentioned there's no industry for this. Really the only reason The Blind Sidegot made was because Fred Cruz, who runs Federal Express, lives nearby within the Tuohy family and contains a boy who dates Tuohy's daughter, which he mentioned, "Guy, that's an excellent story. I'll ensure it is.In . Which he taken proper care of to ensure that it's made. It made an appearance in my opinion a perfect demonstration of the William Goldman line "Nobody knows [anything]." It made an appearance apparent in my opinion, and switched to become apparent, as well as the whole industry of professionals made an appearance being oblivious to the requirement for the story. Moneyball -- I believed, "No freaking way. I am in a position to't observe they'll take action. It's too complicated." The emotions reside in the subsidiary figures. In the event you've see the book, you'll look at this. Scott Hatteberg and Chad Bradford forces you to cry, but Billy Beane is cold inside the book. It's a cooler story. Plus, there's a blizzard of amounts. It's complicated. And not only did Kaira Pitt and [The brand new the new sony's] Amy Pascal latch about it in it, they're like dogs getting a bone. They won't neglected no matter the amount of difficulties. It absolutely was this kind of bizarre experience to find out that level of cla of conviction within the mind in the studio. Amy Pascal basically has huge brass balls. She truly does. In the event you return and check the products which was written after they fired Steven Soderbergh, it absolutely was like, "That is dead, this really is really the finest debacle in recent Hollywood history, blah blah blah." And so they just overlooked everything and basically saved carrying it out. STORY: Just what the Experts Say about 'Moneyball' THR: You spent yearly researching it. Just what amount of the emotional investment perhaps you have have inside the team? Lewis: Hard question. It absolutely was very moving when Scott Hatteberg hit that homer [to win they's 20th game back to back. Very moving. I seen that game with Billy. If the really happened in solid existence, Billy was stuck inside the stadium because of media demands. I don't think I told Bennett Burns however was driving home and he or she mentioned you need to go back to watch history, you're scripting this story, you're all ended within it, something sometimes happens. I believed, "What is may happen with 600people inside the press box. You're unlikely to possess kind of real utilization of people which i would like access. It really apt to be a media drain." Which I came back which i went lower for the bowels in the Colliseum and the sport had started. It absolutely was like 11- once i turned up. I obtained for the clubhouse door and who makes way but Billy which he's inside hiding in Art Helms' office watching the sport since they are up 11- which i hanging out the couch with him which i seen with him. After which it Hatteberg hits this homer. It absolutely was a great scene. You will see it unfolding. When he hits the home run, I used to be very psychologically involved in those days. I didn't make any huge effort to stay detached by doing this nor did In my opinion I'd any obligation to get this done either THR: There's already some honours talk for your film. Give to us your conjecture. Lewis: You need me to produce predictions to be able to appear as an ass in six several days? Let us begin. Moneyballgets a best picture nomination, Kaira Pitt will receive a best actor, Jonah Hill will receive a best supporting actor nomination, [Aaron] Sorkin and [Steve] Zaillian get yourself a script nomination, and Bennett Burns will receive a pointing nomination. That's a few things i think. I am in a position to't inform you whose prone to win because I don't know very well what it's facing. In the event you assisted me guess further blindly, I guess Kaira Pitt wins and Sorkin and Zaillin win. Kaira Pitt Jonah Hill Oscars Moneyball Bennett Burns Oscars 2012
